Timely, thoroughly reported, and well laid out.  Memorable peeling-back of the secrecy-driven culture at Huawei. I liked the thorough reporting done from many fronts and divergent angles.

Coconuts Media, Primitive Technology and the Bizarre Depths of YouTube in Southeast Asia
Judges’ Comments: This was one of the most engaging and impactful entries and makes for fascinating reading and watching. By putting the spotlight on this disturbing corner of the Internet, Coconuts helped to raise awareness about unregulated aspects of YouTube that can facilitate abuse and child pornography, among other things. Truly a fascinating deep dive into the depths of the internet.
Frontier Myanmar, The jade crisis /
Judges’ Comments: This powerful image starkly illustrates the dangers workers face in Myanmar’s jade mines, and reveals the harrowing lengths people go to sustain the country’s jade trade. The scale of the photo is also staggering in scope, and allows the viewer to better understand and process the immensity of the practice. This image is absolutely stunning, as was the effort the photographer Hkun Lat put into capturing it.

 

Pangolins, Public Service, and the Benefits of Collaborative Journalism webinar
The Environmental Reporting Collective, The Pangolin Reports 
Judges’ Comments: While not the first such organisation, the Environmental Reporting Collective is still a trailblazer, bringing together journalists from over 30 countries to launch what its founders call “a trans-national, digital media project on a shoestring budget”. It is a great illustration of what technology has enabled in the world of journalism.

The entry is exemplary work in the best tradition of public service journalism.
